Map Costa Rica - Costa Rica is located in Central America south of Nicaragua and north of Panama. It has a total land mass of approximately 19,700 square miles or 51,000 square kilometers. Much of this extremely mountainous country is uninhabited and overlaid with several types of tropical forest; almost one-third of the land area is protected within reserves.

Administratively, the country is divided into seven provinces and 81 cantones (counties). It has a population of 4.1 million, heavily concentrated in the Central Highlands, with some 350,000 people living in the capital, San Jose.

Central Valley

Central Pacific

Northern Pacific

Southern Pacific

Caribbean Coastal

Northern Plains.

Each region of Costa Rica holds its own legends, sites and events.
