Costa Rica Airlines

International

Costa Rica Airlines - Costa Rica has two international airports that receive flights from all over the world. The Juan Santamaria International Airport or the San Jose International Airport as it is better known, sits just outside of downtown San Jose, some 20 minutes away. It is also very close to the quaint town of Alajuela.

The larger of the two airports, the Juan Santamaria International Airport for a long while was the only airport in Costa Rica. It is served by most US airlines such as Delta, United, American and America West, as well as by many other international airways like Virgin Atlantic, Air Canada, KLM, Iberia, TACA, Mexicana and many more. Visit Costa Rica information page to get more information of national carriers serve Costa Rica. The central location of this airport is perfect, as from here once can reach almost any part of the country within a span of 6 hours.

The second international airport of Costa Rica, the Daniel Oduber International Airport or the Liberia International Airport, is located in the north of Costa Rica in the Guanacaste province. Situated in the provincial capital Liberia, this modern airport is fast becoming the airport of choice for those travellers interested in relaxing or having some fun on the beautiful sunny beaches of Guanacaste and the Nicoya Peninsula. Arriving here means that you can get to Tamarindo or one of the other nearby beaches within an hour. Perfect for those who also wish to travel to the all inclusive Papagayo Gulf, this airport mostly receives international flights from major US carriers only. A small airport, a major overhaul is in the works to accommodate more international flights.

One thing you need to remember when leaving Costa Rica is that there is a US$ 26 departure tax on all international flights exiting the country.

Domestic

A well connected country Costa Rica’s domestic air travel infrastructure is actually quite strong. Flying is one of the easiest ways to get around in Costa Rica, especially to more remote regions such as the Osa Peninsula, where roads are often just dirt tracks. There are two main airlines in the country that provide not only reasonably priced domestic air travel, but also offer scheduled daily flights.

Sansa and Nature Air regularly operate flights to at least 15 destinations across the country linked from San Jose. Both of these Costa Rica airlines use a variety of small prop planes that carry between 9 and 25 passangers. With these airlines you can fly not only to major cities like Liberia International Airport or Quepos Domestic Airport, but you can get flights to remote regions such as the Coto 47 Domestic Airport in South Puntarenas or the Barra del Colorado Domestic Airport in Limon. It is important to note that while Sansa operates from the Juan Santamaria International Airport, Nature Air operates out of the domestic Tobias Bolanos Airport in downtown San Jose, a 20 minute drive away.

Most of the domestic flights are moderately priced at $80 one way, but do keep in mind that during peak tourist season flight prices tend to go up. Some important things that you need to keep in mind when travelling by a domestic airline is;

• Infants and children up to the age of 2 fly for free.

• The maximum baggage allowance per person is 25 lbs or 12 kgs including your carry on bags.

• Excess baggage has additional charges.

• Surfboards are often treated as excess baggage, so it is best contact the airline before hand and find out.

• Make sure when you book to ask if they can take your surfboard, some flights don't have room.

• The price of excess baggage is subject to change.

One can also use charter flights to get to the destination of your choice, while they are slightly more costly, they are a great alternative to travelling on your own schedule.

A number of major airlines have direct flights to Costa Rica from North America and Europe. The picture-map below indicates the major carriers operating flights to San Jose and/or Liberia Airports.
